Conte Costa rift

After weeks of speculation and media fiasco, Diego Costa has finally confirmed that he would be leaving Chelsea this summer as he has been deemed surplus to Chelsea’s requirements by his coach Conte. Diego Costa shocked the world in the post-match press interview of Wednesday’s 2-2 draw between Spain and Colombia as he revealed this news.

“I’m going to be honest, the other day Conte sent me a message saying he does not count on me for next season. So I’ll have to find a way out”, Diego Costa said. This would not come as a surprise to Chelsea supporters as it was something inevitable after the growing tension between Conte and Diego Costa since January.

The rift started during last season’s pre-season when Conte send a message to Diego Costa detailing what he expected of the striker in terms of fitness work over the summer. But true to his nature, Diego Costa replied indifferently, causing a lot of damage to his relationship with the newly appointed Chelsea coach.

Later, Diego Costa publically acclaimed Conte’s practice sessions as being “monotonous” which led to Conte being cold towards the Spaniard. All this build-up led to interest being attracted from 4 Chinese clubs in the January transfer window out of which one, Tianjin Quanjian, made a formal offer for Diego Costa only for it to be rejected by Chelsea.

Now, as it clearly seems to be, both Diego Costa and Conte are willing to part ways. It is indeed for the best of both parties as Diego Costa has been growing highly agitated and erratic since January. The cracks in the duo’s relationship were exposed when Chelsea were behind 1-2 against Arsenal in the FA cup final and Conte substituted Diego Costa with Michy Batshuayi for the last 20 minutes, even though the Spaniard had already scored and was playing well. Diego Costa could be clearly spotted on the sidelines, glancing and fretting after being substituted.
