Jose Mourinho

Manchester United boss Mourinho was snapped in the stands in the Ernst Happel Stadium watching Austria’s thrilling 3-2 World Cup qualifying win over Serbia.

There has been speculation surrounding the reason behind Mourinho’s trip to Vienna.

Various theories were constructed, with the Old Trafford boss, variously reported as watching Serbia midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (not even in the Serbia squad), his team-mate Andrija Zivkovic or Austria defender David Alaba…but none of them were actually in their respective country’s squad.

Austrian TV suggested the Portuguese coach was there to cast on eye over Southampton winger Dusan Tadic, but that has been completed ruled out by Manchester United sources, who suggest the target of the spying mission was another winger.

Eventually, Mirror Sport revealed he was there to take a closer look at Mijat Gacinovic. Gacinovic is Serbian who is  22 years old, who has exploded onto the international scene, scoring two goals in his first three games for his country since being awarded a full cap.

And he has made an equally strong impression in German football after signing for Eintract Frankfurt two years ago.

Prior to that, Gacinovic played for Vojvodina in his native Serbia.

It is said current United star Nemanja Matic, who scored against Austria on Friday night, has told Mourinho about Gacinovic’s quality.

The 22-year-old, regarded as one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting young talents, is reportedly also attracting interest from Arsenal and Bayern Munich. He is currently under contract with Frankfurt until June 2021.

Mourinho’s presence in Austria shows he is serious and he has a route through to the player with Matic seen as a senior figure in the Serbia squad.

The United boss was keen to sign a wide player last summer after tracking Croatia star Ivan Perisic, but was thwarted in his attempt to prise the winger out of Inter Milan.

Gacinovic can play wide on both the left and right of midfield, and is seen as an exciting attacking player who can take opponents on.

But Gacinovic could reportedly be set to move to the Premier League if United decide to launch a bid for him either in January or next summer.

The ex-Vojvodina ace can play across the midfield and has impressed with his high work rate.
