The recently released Forbes list of the highest paid athletes in the world puts Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of the list with total earnings of $93m. Lionel Messi missed the top spot this year as he finished third with $80m of total income.

If current reports from Spanish daily Marca are anything to go by then this Forbes list could go for a shuffle next year as Lionel Messi could become the highest paid player in the world. Reportedly Jorge Messi, father of Lionel Messi, has been in Barcelona for the past few days, discussing a new deal for his son with Barca executives.

The current deal of Lionel Messi was to expire in the summer of 2018, which is after next season, and the Catalan giants ran the risk of losing Lionel Messi for “nothing” next year. But their concerns have been rested as the two parties have seemed to finally agree on terms.

The new deal would provide Lionel Messi with a reported fee around £30m a year and his wages may wary according to his performances each year and various other factors. As has been reported, the new contract between Lionel Messi and Barcelona would run until the summer of 2021 or 2022.

Lionel Messi scored 54 goals in 52 appearances for the Blaugranes in the last season but even his stellar performances were not enough to avoid a mediocre season for Barcelona. Now, what’s to see is whether he can make up for it in the next half of the year and put up a good challenge for the Ballon d’or.

With terms being finally agreed upon by Barca and Lionel Messi, Ernesto Valverde, Barcelona’s new head coach, would now be looking to prepare for next season and bring in some much needed quality into Barca’s squad.
